  • Canadian Roofing Company Ltd. supplies and installs both entry-level traditional three-tab shingles and architectural designer type fiberglass shingles. We are part of Owens Corning’s Preferred Contractor list in recognition of our professional craftsmanship and adherence to industry standards when it comes to quality installations and material selection. Over the years we have installed every shingle brand on the North American market and will gladly help guide you in choosing the right product for your project.

    25 and 30-year 3-tab shingles

Traditional three-tab, self sealing asphalt shingles have a smooth appearance and a pro-rated warranty of 25 to 30 years. The main difference between the life expectancy of certain shingles is the weight and thickness. As an industry-standard, this type of shingle is more economical and easier to install.

    Designer and architectural shingles

Architectural self sealing, fibreglass shingles simulate cedar shingles in appearance, but are much more durable and weather-resistant. They have a layered (3D) look to them that is the result of having multiple layers of material. Though more expensive than traditional 3-tab and generally more laborious to install, architectural shingles provide longer pro-rated warranties are generally thicker and heavier than standard 3-tab shingles, higher resistance to weather conditions and raise the overall value of the house.

What to expect during a shingle roof installation:

    • Property protection and coverage using plywood and tarps.

    • Removal of ALL old roofing material.

    • Repair and replacement of rotten boards/plywood underneath the shingles if needed

    • Re-nailing and re-securing of roof deck.  This will help enhance the look of the roof by providing a flat surface to install the new material to.

    • Installation of drip edge metal flashing to the eavestrough area of the roof.  This will minimize animal entry, ice back-up and leaky eavestroughs.

    • Installation of ice and water shield underlayment to perimeter of eaves line, valleys, skylights, chimney areas and vulnerable locations.  This high performance underlayment will greatly reduce the risk of ice and water from backing up around vulnerable roof areas.

    • Our technicians will advise as to the amount of ice and water shield membrane need for your type of architecture.

    • Synthetic underlayment installation.  This high performance material provides a secondary level of protection and is installed above the ice and water shield membrane for added snow and ice protection.

    • Installation of shingles.  These are fastened using galvanized nails.

    • Proper ventilation – shingle roof vents, bathroom exhaust vents, ridge venting.  Venting is designed to provide continuous air flow to remove condensation.  Improperly vented roof structures could reduce the life expectancy of shingles upwards of 25% and make it more costly heating and cooling your home.

    • Installation of metal flashing details ie. Chimney, valleys, intersecting walls.

    • Caulking, sealing, and clean up of all debris.

A roofing system alone will not provide enough heat retention without proper insulation. Canadian Roofing Company Ltd. can make sure that the structure is properly insulated for optimal energy efficiency. Read up on our Insulation services or call us for more information.

    Organic Asphalt vs. Fiberglass shingles

Organic Asphalt shingles first became available in the early 1950s and were an economical alternative to cedar and slate. They were made by saturating organic felt paper sheathing with layers of tar and top coated with small coloured ceramic stones. While promoting an image of environmental friendliness, these organic asphalt shingles increasingly proved to be incapable of holding up in today’s changing environment. As a result of climate change, winters and summers have brought unstable, varying temperatures which causes freeze and thaw cycles. This temperature fluctuation creates a lot of movement in the plywood and roof board decking. This movement causes cracking, splitting, pre-mature breakdown and failure of the shingles before their life expectancy. As a result of product failure, manufacturers, both in Canada and the U.S, chose to discontinue the organic line of shingles and replace with the fiberglass technology.

Fiberglass shingles are identical to organic asphalt shingles in terms of looks but are much more flexible and durable based on performance. This enhanced design allows the shingle to better respond to temperature fluctuations and roof deck movement. The paper that reinforces the shingle is a fiberglass synthetic type that is coated with several layers of tar. This particular combination allows the shingles to expand and contract in response to temperature changes, allowing less chance for breaking or cracking. The fiberglass option is thereby today’s recommended solution and is the industry standard.

Owens Corning makes fiberglass shingles that have been acknowledged by many contractors for their quality and durability and are considered one of the best shingles on the market according to CONSUMER REPORTS MAGAZINE in house reviews. Canadian Roofing Company Ltd. is part of Owens Corning’s Preferred Contractor list in recognition of our professional craftsmanship and adherence to latest industry standards.

  • Canadian Roofing Company Ltd. provides flat roofing systems that generally consist of multiple layers of roofing material laid down in a series of plies that are torched down and heat welded using a hand held torch hooked up to a propane tank. This material is known as Modified Bitumen Membrane (Mod-Bit). The membrane consists of a fibreglass reinforcing material that is placed between layers of rubberized asphalt then top coated with small ceramic stones that reflect heat, UV rays and protects from the elements. The advantage of this type of flat roofing is its durability, clean appearance, multiple colours, light weight design which is easy on structures, easily repairable and weather-resistant for the Canadian climate. These membranes have been available for over 25 years and have evolved from a single ply application to the more commonly used two-ply system today. Prior to that, most flat roofing was done using a built-up tar and gravel roofing system which was a lot heavier on the structure, made repairs and servicing expensive, was more labour intensive and required costly commercial equipment. This type of roofing is more commonly used in industrial applications, and the torched on membrane system is normally used in residential and commercial roofing.

What to expect during flat roof installation:

    • Property protection and coverage using plywood and tarps.

    • Removal of ALL old roofing material.

    • Repair and replacement of rotten boards/plywood decking underneath the flat roof if needed.

    • Re-nailing and re-securing of roof deck.  This will help enhance the look of the roof by providing a flat surface to install the new material to and minimize the chance of premature cracking to roofing material.

    • Inspect roof decking for adequate slope for drainage and advise homeowner if repairs are needed.

    • Inspect flat roof cavities for proper levels of insulation and advise homeowner.

    • Installation of ISO board foam core RIDGID insulation (optional)

    • Installation of 25lb heat resistant fiberglass paper.

    • Installation of 1/8” fiberglass heat resistant protecto board sheathing.  These two items are designed to provide fire and heat protection of wood structures.

    • Installation of a 2.2mm OR 3mm torched down base sheet (1st ply of 2 ply system)

    • Installation of 4mm torched down cap sheet to waterproof (2nd ply of 2 ply system)

    • Install drip edge perimeter eaves flashing.  This is designed to direct water into eavestroughing system and guard against animal entry.

    • Ventilation – bathroom exhaust vents and flat roof venting for removal of condensation.

    • Installation of flashings to plumbing pipes and exhaust pipes.

    • Installation of metal flashing details to chimney, walls etc.

    • Caulking, sealing, debris removal

A roofing system alone will not provide enough heat retention without proper insulation. Canadian Roofing Company Ltd. can make sure that the structure is properly insulated for optimal energy efficiency. Read up on our Insulation services or call us for more information: 416-485-0811

  • Canadian Roofing Company Ltd. installs pre-painted, aluminum 5” and 6” seamless eavestroughing. This system of troughing and downpipes is designed to carry water away from house foundations. The advantage of aluminum is its maintenance free design, as it does not rust, and is available in many colours to complement a homes exterior. Your eavestroughing is only as strong as the wood fascia boards or rafters that it is attached to. Always make sure that rotten and damaged wood is properly replaced prior to installing the eavestrough.

Installing a Leaf Guard system is highly recommended for homeowners who have trees nearby and want to minimize cleaning and maintenance. Eavestroughing systems with out Leaf Guard generally need to be cleaned out twice a year, in spring and fall to function optimally. Debris can negatively affect water flow, and in the winter months ice and snow build-up can force its way under the roofing material and potentially enter the structure causing water damage.

    A Leaf Guard system:

    • Protects the eavestrough from leaves and debris from clogging

    • Prevents ice and snow build-up

    • Provides additional strength to the overall structure of the eavestrough and will greatly minimize cleaning and maintenance.

The City of Toronto has a By-Law in place restricting eavestrough water from entering the homes weeping tile drainage system. In most cases water needs to be directed to garden and grassed areas. As an option, consider installing a Rain Barrel collection and diverter system. In certain situations based on topography, homeowners can apply for an exemption on-line or by calling 311. http://www.toronto.ca

  • Canadian Roofing Company Ltd. installs aluminum soffit and fascia cladding that is maintenance free and corrosion resistant. These pre-painted aluminum panels come in a variety of different colours and styles to match your homes exterior. Soffit and fascia panels are used to clad the overhang assembly around the perimeter of a shingle or flat roof.

Soffit vents are needed to provide air circulation within the roof structure to prevent condensation and mold issues. Older homes generally have wood soffit and fascia details which require ongoing maintenance and repairs. Consider going maintenance free!
Fascia aluminum is a cladding that covers the wood fascia boards and is installed behind the eavestroughing as is part of the overall assembly.

    Siding

Canadian Roofing Company Ltd. supplies and installs aluminum, vinyl, composite and wood siding over various surfaces. We can also install Styrofoam Ridgid insulation and an air and moisture barrier (ie TYVEK house wrap) behind the siding to help prevent air infiltration and heat loss. Siding material is designed to protect the home against the elements, comes in many different colours, patterns and designs as well as varying warranties. Our professionals will discuss options to suite your needs.

  • It should be noted that the roofing material is only as good as the decking to which it is fastened to. If the sloping shingles and flat roof look wavy and rippled, have indentations and are holding ponding water in various spots outside of wear and tear, the problem may be with the structure. That is why we provide customized carpentry solutions and options that target the overall roof structure and appearance. From basic roof board replacement and installation of plywood sheathing, to reframing, resloping, attic stabilizing and redesign. We can help design a roof that’s right for you!

Some architects and designers are more concerned about the esthetics of the home when designing, than the overall function. This attitude, coupled with bad design can greatly impact the longevity of the roof and can cause the roofing material to prematurely fail under certain stress. Our technicians are skilled at diagnosing these issues and can create a comprehensive plan to correct and improve on these very common design and building flaws.

  • GO GREEN with Canadian Roofing Company Ltd!

Did you know that up to 50 to 70% of your home’s heat loss occurs through the ceilings? With today’s rising energy costs, the right insulation system can save you money, reduce the amount of energy you use and make your home more comfortable. Open attic areas, flat roof rafter cavities, access ceiling panels , pot lights and other ceiling breaches can all add up to significant areas of heat loss in your home. Hot air naturally rises and cooler air stays lower to the ground. The more insulation you have on top of the ceiling material, the less transmission of heat loss you will have. Fortunately, this issue can be solved by increasing insulation to the open attic spaces and flat roof structure.

In sloping shingle roofs, we can usually enter the attic space through an access panel located in a closet area. If no panel is available, we can frame and install one from scratch. This will allow the owner future access to the attic space for other types of repairs. Remember, your attic hatch door needs proper insulation and weather stripping to seal it off, otherwise, hot air will enter your attic and could condense and create mold issues. Once in your attic, we can evaluate what needs doing and determine how much insulation to install if any. The most cost effective insulation option would be either blown in fibreglass, Owens Corning Attic or blown in cellulose material

On flat roof structures while the roof is removed, we can strategically remove sections of the roof boards to access the rafter cavities and determine the particular insulation requirements of your flat roof. Once exposed, we can blow in fibreglass or cellulose material into these hard to reach areas.  On certain roof designs it may be advisable to use a combination of ISO board foam core RIDGID roof insulation, which is sold in varying thicknesses and R- Values, 2lb high density spray foam material and/or blown in fibreglass/cellulose material.

There is only two ways to insulate a flat roof:

    1. Externally, while the flat roof is removed and while we have access to rafter cavities. This is the less disruptive and cost effective as the boards can easily be removed and replaced where needed.

    2. Internally, which would involve cutting and removing sections of ceiling material and blowing in or installing fibreglass batt material. This type of installation is more commonly used during full renovations and removal of ceiling and wall material.

Canadian Roofing Company Ltd. offers the following types of insulation:

    • Blown-in fibreglass insulation: ( R- Value per inch = approx 3 ) This is an inorganic synthetic material that is blown in place using a machine for open attic spaces and flat roof rafter cavities to increase thermal efficiency.

    • Blown-in cellulose insulation: ( R-Value per inch = approx 3.5)  Cellulose is an organic product made from ground up newsprint mixed with fire retardants. The material is blown in through a machine into open attic spaces and flat roof rafter cavities to increase thermal efficiency.

    • 2-lb closed-cell spray foam insulation: (R-Value per inch = approx 6.5)  This sprayed in material is the most costly of insulation options as the raw cost of the material is very expensive to purchase and the equipment is very expensive to buy and maintain. The R Value of the material increases with each inch of added spray foam material. This product is great for hard to reach areas like crawl spaces, duct work, garage ceilings with living space above, cantilevered bay windows that are exposed to the elements ,rafter pockets where floor joists meet the foundation wall, etc.

    • Remember the higher the R- Value number, the greater the insulating power!

Our experts are available to advise you on the best insulation solutions for your particular needs and budget.

  • Canadian Roofing Company Ltd., re-builds, repairs and tuckpoints chimneys. Gas and oil fumes are very corrosive to brick and masonry chimneys .Chimneys that are not properly lined with a metal or clay liner will allow hot moist air to enter the cold brick chimney and will cause the brick and mortar to prematurely fail resulting in repairs.

Not having a proper protective concrete cap will allow freezing water to create fissure cracks and contribute to brick spalling. We will inspect your chimney and provide repair options.

Re-building generally requires scaffolding of chimney for safe access, removal down to the roof level, re-building to existing height using matching brick, installing a hardened piece of concrete to crown of chimney for protection, new clay flue pots with animal screens and roofing and flashing repairs to waterproof.

Tuckpointing is essentially re-grouting of the mortar and can be done when chimneys are not too far gone.

Chimneys are designed for two purposes, venting of the furnace and hot water tank and the exhaust of smoke from fireplace.

Homes that have upgraded to a high efficiency direct vent furnace and hot water tank may no longer need their existing chimney as the venting is directed outside through a vent pipe. In this case, your chimney may eligible to be removed below the roof structure and decommissioned.

  • Canadian Roofing Company Ltd., installs, repairs and modifies skylight structures. We install both double-domed acrylic curb-mount and thermo-pane glass units.

Curb-mount skylights are mounted on to a built on site 2” x 4” wooden frame or come in a factory finished built unit. Both designs enable our technicians to install a rubber membrane ice and water shield underlayment as well as custom metal flashing and factory made flashing to the skylight frame to weatherproof. This design is available in both double domed acrylic units and the more costly thermo-pane glass units which come with opening and closing as options. These are ideal for the Canadian climate as they elevate the skylight above the snow and ice level. From an engineering perspective, the curb mount unit is far superior in design and construction. Canadian Roofing Company Ltd. installs VELUX and ALLIED BRAND units. Call us today at 416-485-0811 and our technicians will gladly advise you on the best unit to fit your design.

Self-flashing skylights have a small 3-inch plastic flange around the perimeter of the skylight. Roof shingles are designed to overlap onto the flange and are caulked in place for protection. However, if the caulking fails, the skylight will start to leak. These skylights are cheaper than curb mount, are considered builder grade and also have a high failure rate. We do no install this type of skylight.

  • Why ventilate?

Proper ventilation is essential in gaining the maximum life out of your shingle and flat roof. Homes without proper ventilation risk shortening the life expectancy of their roof by approximately 25%. Overlooking the roofing and soffit ventilation system in your home can result in:

    1. premature failure of the roofing material

    2. buckling of the roofing due to deck movement

    3. rotting of the wood members

    4. moisture accumulation in insulation

    5. increased heating and A/C costs

With proper ventilation air will circulate freely under the roof deck and carry away water vapour before it can condense. One of the best methods is a combination of eaves or soffit vents and ridge or roof vents which provide a natural draft from bottom to the top of attic space. At Canadian Roofing Company Ltd., we can design a ventilation system to suite your needs.

    Types of venting we install:

    • Aluminum sloping shingle vents

    • Turbine and ridge vents

    • Bathroom and kitchen exhaust vents

    • Soffit eaves vents and gable louver vents

Our technicians will be able to advise on the best solution for your ventilation needs. Call us today to get your estimate: 416-485-0811
